February 14, 1845: John Gordon becomes the last person to be executed in Rhode Island.

In our continuing series, This Month in Rhode Island History, C. Morgan Grefe, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Historical Society details the controversy surrounding the 1845 execution of Irish immigrant, John Gordon. Seven years later, Rhode Island abolished capital punishment for all crimes before bringing it back for limited use and ultimately abolishing it again in 1984.
