Between the American Revolution and the Civil War, more African Americans were employed in the maritime trades than in any other industry. Yet their stories have been lost to history. Rhode Island PBS Weekly profiles Paul Cuffee, a Black whaler turned merchant who became one of the wealthiest people of color in America and later spearheaded the movement to resettle Black Americans to Africa.
