Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipHi, I'm Maria, and this is my daughter, Maliyah And we are going to be showing you a build-the-house activity.
And we use this activity to hold our emotions that we may be feeling throughout the day.
Right.
So we are going to teach you how to build a house and how to utilize that house to hold your emotions.
Right.
I know that I experience a lot of emotions throughout the day.
Right.
What about you, Maliyah?
You experience a lot of emotions throughout the day?
Yeah!
What kind of emotions may you experience in one day?
Excited, mad, sad and happy.
And that is a lot of emotions.
Right.
And if we are feeling all of those emotions in our head throughout the day, sometimes it might be hard to concentrate on other things, to move on to a different activity.
Right, Because you're feeling all of those emotions.
So we're going to teach you how to build this house that is going to hold that emotion so that you can come back to it later and talk with your parent about it or come back to it later and talk to yourself about it.
Right.
I know that I'm not always around Maliyah throughout the day, so she may be feeling some of these emotions and she's going to put them in her house so that she can talk to me about them throughout the day Or for instance, I know you hear this big thunderstorm right in the back of me and sometimes that makes me scared.
So I might not want to talk about the big thunderstorm that is happening right now, but I can put that really in my house and then come back and talk to it later maybe once the thunderstorm is over and talk about how that thunderstorm scared me.
So let's get into building our house.
Right.
And with any house, you start with a good foundation, right?
So you build your house and I'll build mine And how I like to build my house is using the colors that represent the feeling that I am feeling right now.
So if I'm feeling happy, I may use brighter colors, right?
If I'm feeling sad, I may use a little bit of a darker color.
How do you how do you choose your colors, Maliyah?
My colors might be like a bright color and like your favorite color.
Yep.
Okay, let's get to building our house.
And I am just building my house separate here and building my walls.
What about you?
What are you building your homes?
Yeah, well, your house is looking good, so, yeah, you can pick the colors of your house based on how you're feeling, based on your favorite.
And just get your house built.
You can build windows, if you like, for your house or just walls if you're not wanting that emotion to escape.
Right.
How are you building yours?
Perfect.
Perfect.
Okay.
- -My finishing touch.
- -Your finishing touch?
Okay.
I got mine, too.
So here's my house.
You got your house, Maliyah?
A beautiful house.
And let's show how we would put our emotion here.
So I'm going to think of an emotion that I'm feeling.
And remember, I was talking about that scared emotion.
I'm going to think about that emotion, put it in my hand, and then I'm going to tuck it away in my house.
Right.
And that emotion of scared is in that house now.
Show me how you would put your emotion in your house.
I was pretty scared.
in my emotion, I would put sad in my emotion, my happy emotion and my excited emotion.
Okay, so Maliyah actually built a house to where she can put her separate emotions in a space each.
That's very creative.
I love that.
So then after we would put our emotion in that house, we could then put it away, right?
Maybe come back to it later.
Or if I came home later in the day, Maliyah would be like, Hey, I want to talk to you about these emotions.
And she could tell me about each compartment of that feeling she was feeling throughout the day.
She could tell me why she was maybe feeling excited, why she was feeling sad.
Right.
So she could tell me about all of these emotions.
And then sometimes, like this rainstorm, right, when I am feeling that emotion right then and there and I don't want to talk about it right then.
And I put that scared emotion in and I put it away.
And then the rainstorm is over, and then I'm feeling a little bit better.
I can bring it out and then talk about why I was scared.
And what about that rainstorm scared me.
So you can utilize your house in many, many ways.
And this is a way just to help you deal with all the emotions that you may be feeling, because sometimes they could be all in our head.
Like I was saying, it make it hard for us to do other things.
So this is a way we can get them out of our head to come in here and deal with them at a later time or with our preferred adult right.
So thank you for building a house with us and thank you to my assistant, Maliyah.
You have fun.
Yeah, me too.
