Master butcher Fidelis Waldvogel promised a fallen WWI comrade he would take care of his pregnant wife Eva, so he marries her offhand. To find a better life for her and himself, he emigrates--all the way to Argus, North Dakota. Eva and circus performer Delphine strike up a close friendship. But the Waldvogels are in for hard times.
